Dr. Jomel B. Pinera, a distinguished faculty member of the College of Criminal Justice Education at Cagayan State University-Gonzaga (CSU-Gonzaga), was awarded Best Paper during the 3rd International Conference on Management and Social Sciences held on November 23-24, 2024. Dr. Pinera’s presentation, delivered virtually, brought pride and honor to the university and the campus.
The award-winning research, titled "Knowledge, Implementation, and Compliance with Forestry Laws Among Forest Dependent Communities: Towards a Sustainable Forest Management," assessed the awareness, enforcement, and adherence to critical forestry laws such as Presidential Decree 705 (Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines) and Republic Act 9175 (Chainsaw Act of 2002). Dr. Pinera's findings underscore the vital role of forest-dependent communities in sustainable forest management and contribute to global efforts in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, which promotes the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and forest conservation.
This study also aligns with CSU-Gonzaga’s niche program on Agroforestry, emphasizing the campus’s commitment to ecological sustainability and community empowerment.
Researchers from prestigious institutions across the globe, including universities in the Philippines, Thailand, Finland, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates, participated in the conference, underscoring the international recognition of Dr. Pinera's work.
Dr. Pinera’s achievement not only highlights the significance of his research in sustainable forest management but also reinforces CSU-Gonzaga’s leadership in agroforestry and environmental studies.
